 Abstract

The conventional model predictive current control (MPCC) of a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) traverses the 6 nonzero voltage vectors (VVs) and 2 zero VVs of a voltage source inverter (VSI), which causes large calculation burden. To improve real-time performance and to not degrade control performance at the same, three streamlined control sets are proposed in this paper based on the utilization of VVs. Because the utilization of VVs whose dq-axis component signs are both contrary to dq-axis current state is always very low, streamlined control set I can eliminate it to reduce the VVs to 5 or 6. The utilization of the sum of zero VV and VVs whose dq-axis component signs are both the same. When dq-axis current state is high, streamlined control set II can only use these two kinds of VVs to reduce the VVs to 2 or 3. When dq-axis current error is low, the utilization of zero VV is high, the MPCC can output zero VV directly. When the dq-axis current error is high, streamlined control set III can only use VVs whose dq-axis component signs are both the same as the dq-axis current state to reduce the VVs to 1 or 2. Simulation results show that the control performance of MPCC for a PMSM using streamlined control sets are almost the same as using the conventional control set. However, the maximum number of alternative VVs in the control set is reduced from 7 to 6, 3, and 2. Real-time experimental results show that the streamlined control sets proposed in this paper can reduce the runtime when compared with the conventional control set.
