Novel modulation strategy for suppressing dv/dt and peak value of common‑mode voltage in H8 inverters

 Abstract

To suppress the high dv/dt and peak values of common-mode voltage resulting from the traditional zero voltage vectors and vector arrangements in H8 inverters, this paper proposes an optimized space vector modulation strategy that employs Open_active zero voltage vectors. First, this paper proposes the concept of Open_active zero voltage vectors and analyzes its common-mode equivalent circuit. Based on this analysis and the principle of minimal switching actions, the proposed modulation strategy utilizes suitable Open_active zero vectors to replace the traditional zero voltage vectors, effectively reducing the common-mode voltage to zero under the Open_active zero voltage vectors without requiring additional passive components. Furthermore, the high dv/dt transients of common-mode voltage caused by non-ideal factors, such as dead time, are eliminated by optimizing the switching sequence. The proposed modulation strategy achieves lower power loss, reduces the necessity for extra passive components, and effectively suppresses the conducted electromagnetic interference across the whole frequency range compared to the existing modulation strategies for H8 inverters. In addition, the proposed modulation strategy maintains the same DC bus utilization, output harmonic distortion, and switching times as the space vector modulation strategy. Finally, experimental results confirm that the proposed optimized modulation strategy is effective.
